Youth

TB HIV Care’s Priority Populations Prevention initiatives aim to reduce HIV among vulnerable youth, especially adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) aged 15- 24, by addressing key risk factors like teenage pregnancy, gender-based violence, and economic insecurity.

Through the PEPFAR-funded DREAMS programme in KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape, TB HIV Care provides youth-friendly prevention, psychosocial, and structural services, alongside intensive economic strengthening to empower AGYW with skills, training, and support for financial independence and long-term HIV prevention.

Key populations

TB HIV Care supports vulnerable populations in South Africa- including inmates, people who inject drugs (PWID), and sex workers through specialised HIV, TB, and STI services. In correctional centres, it partners with the Department of Correctional Services to deliver comprehensive care and pilot hepatitis integration.

For PWID, the Step Up and HarmLESS projects provide harm reduction services in multiple cities. Among sex workers, mobile and drop-in centres across eight districts offer inclusive, rights-based healthcare, including PrEP, ART, and reproductive services.

Communities

TB HIV Care provides integrated HIV and TB services across South Africa, focusing on high-burden provinces like the Eastern and Western Cape.

In the Eastern Cape, it supports efforts to meet global health targets through prevention, testing, and treatment for adults and vulnerable groups.

In the Western Cape, multidisciplinary teams offer facility and community-based care. Nationally, TB services are embedded across all programmes, with efforts to expand screening, treatment, and access to preventive therapy and medication, including for children.
